Two discounts of 20% and 10% are not the same as a single 30% discount. When discounts stack, the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. A $100 item with 20% off becomes $80, and then 10% off $80 brings it to $72 — a total savings of 28%, not 30%. Understanding this helps you evaluate whether "extra 15% off sale items" is really as good as it sounds.

Discount is the percentage reduction from the selling price. Markup is the percentage added to the cost to set the selling price. Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. A product with a 50% markup has a 33% margin. Knowing the difference helps retailers set discount levels that still preserve profitability.

Research shows that "50% more free" is perceived as a better deal than "33% off," even though they're mathematically equivalent. Anchor pricing — showing the original price crossed out next to the sale price — increases perceived value. As a shopper, always calculate the final price rather than relying on the discount percentage alone to make sure you're genuinely getting a good deal.
