Read the tip amount, total with tip, and per person lines. If your app version supports rounding, use it to avoid awkward cents when everyone pays cash. Re-run the numbers if someone joins or leaves before the check is closed.

Tip is a percentage of the chosen base: tip = bill × (rate ÷ 100). The grand total is bill + tip. For an even split, each share = grand total ÷ number of people.

If you model tip on the amount after sales tax, replace bill with that larger figure in the same formulas — the structure does not change, only the base.

In the United States, the standard restaurant tip is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 25% or more is common. Takeout orders typically warrant a smaller tip of 10–15%, while delivery drivers usually receive 15–20%. Bartenders customarily receive $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the bar tab.

Tipping customs vary worldwide. In many European countries a service charge is already included, making additional tips optional. In Japan, tipping can actually be considered rude. Always check the bill for an included gratuity before adding your own.

When splitting a bill evenly, the total (including tip) is divided by the number of diners. This works well when everyone ordered similarly priced items. For uneven orders, some groups prefer to split proportionally — each person pays for what they ordered plus their share of the tip calculated on their subtotal.

Etiquette experts generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal since the tax goes to the government, not the server. However, tipping on the full amount including tax is also acceptable and often simpler. The difference is usually small — on a $50 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% pre-tax versus post-tax differs by less than a dollar.

One approach is to round each person's share to the nearest dollar and let one person cover the few cents of drift, or use a payment app that splits to the cent. Another is to bump the tip slightly so the per-person amount lands on whole bills. The calculator gives you exact figures first; you decide the social rounding.

In the U.S., many workers rely on tips for a large share of income, so withholding tip entirely is a strong signal. Consider a lower percentage (e.g. 10%) for repeated issues, and speak to a manager for food safety or harassment concerns. Use the calculator to see what different percentages mean in dollars before you decide.

Treat the auto-gratuity as part of the obligation you're splitting. Enter the subtotal that already reflects that charge, or add the gratuity line to your bill field and set tip to 0% if you do not intend to double-tip. When service exceeded the mandatory amount, an extra cash thank-you on top is still common.
