Tax added to a pre-tax price: tax = subtotal × (rate / 100), total = subtotal + tax.

Tax included in a shelf price: pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate/100), tax = total − pre-tax. Many consumers confuse these; register receipts often show both splits.

It depends on jurisdiction and how the venue structures the check. In some places tax applies only to food and beverage; in others certain service charges are taxable. When in doubt, read the itemized receipt or ask the business.

E-commerce platforms use shipping address, seller nexus rules, and product category to determine tax. A different ZIP code or marketplace facilitator laws can change the combined rate from what you are used to in-store.
